Mixed Numbers
Mixed numbers are numbers that have a combination of whole numbers like 1, 2, and 3 and fractions like 1/2.
To understand what mixed numbers mean let us look at the mixed number 1 7/8 using blocks.
Look familiar? It should! It is the same result we got for the improper fraction 15/8.
In fact you can switch (or convert) improper fractions into mixed numbers, and mixed numbers into improper fractions.

Converting
The video below will demonstrate how to convert mixed numbers into improper fractions.
When watching the video keep these two questions in mind:
1) What are the steps to make an improper fraction? 2) Does the denominator change at all? |
The first step to convert a mixed number into an improper fraction is to multiply the whole number by the denominator of the mixed number. Then you add the numerator of the fraction to the product of the whole number multiplied by the denominator to get the new numerator of the improper fraction. The denominator does not change at all, and you keep the same denominator.
5) Once you have your new numerator, just put the old denominator under it to get your improper fraction.
