Converting Improper Fractions Into Mixed Numbers
Converting improper fractions in mixed numbers is easy! To understand the method we are going to practice with the fraction 7/4.
Meaning
To see if 7/4 converted is really 1 3/4 we will compare the two using blocks.
First, we will start with the fraction 7/4. We know know that 7/4 means we have 7 small blocks that are 1/4 a big block.
The image to the right shows that the fraction 7/4 is represented by one big complete block and another block where 1/4 is missing. In other words only 3/4 of that block are present. |
Now we can examine the mixed number 1 3/4. We know that the whole number 1 represents a whole block that is broken up into parts of 1/4. The fractions 3/4 means that there is a block that only has 3/4 of the smaller blocks.
As we can see both numbers have the same number of blocks. So by using blocks we can see that 7/4 is equal to 1 3/4. |
